5 Secrets Your "Kuripot Neighbor" Won't Tell You

We hate people who are kuripot! In this consumer-driven country, we often tagged them as "selfish", "mukhang-pera", and "hoarders". Saving is not cool and we live in a "YOLO" world. If you are a student, the popular guy is always the extravagant who are living a lavish life. He's always the rich kid as what we all know, siya ang bida! We love them because they are the game-go and we benefit from their raining cash and blessings.

Is it bad to be a kuripot or they're just misunderstood? In my journey from being a spender to a frugal person, I've learn something along the way that those who are frugal are the "coolest" fellows on earth.

1. People who are kuripot are true friends.

We value friendship and it's a guarantee that "hindi namin kayo uutangan". Over the years, I've seen many relationships broke because of money and debts and I experienced some... I had a friend who I treated dearly but after borrowing some cash, she became a different person when I told her it's time to pay. Of course, it ends up badly having her not able to pay the amount and went AWOL! I've found out that my co-workers had borrowed almost everyone in the office. That was sad, friendship was over just that!

2. People who are kuripot live simply and dont want to show off.

Frugal people are always behind the scene and keep their privacy. There was a story of a man named Ronald Read who was a janitor. His inspiring story was featured in CNN and other media networks. People thought that he's a homeless and not being able to live well. One customer even gave him food because he was living a very modest life, even confronted someone because of a parking fee. After his death, people were astonished on multi-millions of stocks and assets he acquired on his investments. Even some portions were donated to community projects. That was a great surprise!

Another example is Warren Buffet, I admired him the most because he's a great role model. He's the greatest investor of all time and one of the richest in the world. However, He is still living in their old house he bought in 1958, eating in the same restaurant, and riding in the same old car. He even refused to ride a luxury class even he owns the biggest airline company. Several years ago, he donated almost all of his wealth to the charity and would just be leaving very small portion to his children saying; it is time to give back! Read the book "The Millionaire Next Door": The Surprising Secrets of America’s Wealthy. You will learn from there that millionaires spend less than what they earn and most of them avoid buying status objects or leading a status lifestyle.

I've known many people who are just living simple lives but having millions in assets and I've  also known some who are always showing off but in reality are broke.

3. Kuripot People are not selfish! We just follow a certain budget.

I had an aunt who's always the topic of my relatives because she is very thrifty and a serial "kuripot". Most of my relatives does not like her. I even grew up hating her because of what I heard from them. I just realized now what is the reason behind it. Now she's able to build a decent life, sent kids to good schools, and have a successful business. She has become the saving grace of my relatives in times of need and emergency.

Saying "No" to a borrower is not rude, saying "Yes" otherwise is; when it is because of pride that you cant refuse. I struggled with it early in life. Saying "No" with all honesty is not bad. So don't be offended if you have a co-worker who say no to you when you're borrowing. It can be that he's just on a tight budget.

4. Being kuripot is not natural, it is learned.

Being frugal is a decision. If you have read my blog How I escaped from being broke to become an Investor, you will read there that I did not start as a smart saver. I was a bad spender and a one-day millionaire but I learned life the hard way. I read books and studied how to save wisely. It did not happen overnight but with right mindset and self disciple, finally it became my lifestyle. Being named a "kuripot" has become my compliment.

5. Being kuripot is forever.

Frugality is a continuous habit and a step by step process. As long as we are are not depriving important things and basic needs, we are in the right course. Saving can open many opportunities in business and investments. The point is, it does not have to be your passion to apply it in your life. In my case, I did it because it is necessary. Being frugal is a good lifestyle that we can pass to the next generation just like the Chinese people in our country. Lets not envied them instead lets learn from them.
